Tell us a little about yourself.
I'm Cutty the CEO of Cutty TV, my real name is Terrance. I am a Jersey native and a proud supporter. In the daytime I am a banker at TD Bank and the rest of my time is solely spent working on my craft and trying to support all of Jersey by putting them on my show. I have worked with many talented Jersey artists and been blessed to help a lot if artist with their music.
How did you get started in your industry?
The love for video production started in high school. My PC service teacher started my love for video production when he made us do a two week long project, about computer safety, which I was recognized for by the state.
Did you always want to have a career in your industry?
No, my first career choice was actually to work on computers. All I ever wanted in life was to take a computer apart and figure out how to put it back together. I was a big computer nerd who loved to take his electronics apart.
When you started your career, were you surrounded by a support unit?
Very little. I was a nobody, still am to me. It's surprised me the growth I've seen over the past year though, people actually walk up to me and say "yo I support what your doing, you're really representing Jersey." That's what keeps me going, I do it for the unnoticed.
How did you stay motivated through the rough patches?
My brother who is doing 15 years. That's 15 years I don't have with him, so when he comes home we gotta be able to do what we talked about when he was home.
How did you turn your passion into a successful business?
I believe the work I put into my production is what makes it successful. You got to have top quality for people to take you seriously, especially when you are charging. So I make sure my clients are happy with what they get from me. In the end most people want to pay you.
Was there ever a time you wanted to give up on your passion? What made you keep going?
Of course, there isn't one successful person that will tell you that they didn't have a thought of quitting. When you're putting your all into something and nobody notices, it takes determination to keep going. What kept me going was that I had people counting on me and I couldn't me the next one not being anything in life.
Did you ever doubt you'd be successful?
I never had a doubt in my mind, I knew I was going to be something since I was young. I was just waiting for what would bring me success, so now that I have it, I'm going to keep working at it until I've done all that needs to be done.
How important is it for you, to create a good work/life balance?
Very important, everyone in my life inspires me. My family and friends are a big part of my life because they are my down time where I can just be myself and enjoy life. You don't want to forget about the ones that care about you, they are more valuable then money can be.
What are your views on the importance of networking and building relationships in your field?
I think that's the only way you are going to climb the ladder. 50 cent said you gonna be as rich as the person you talk to for no reason. Don't hate on the next man, work with him and expand your connections.
What's the best advice you can give aspiring entrepreneurs?
Don't do this if you aren't ready to give every breathe to it, you don't get famous over night and you don't get rich the next day. Your business is your foundation and you don't get to the top without starting from the bottom.
What's next for you? Where do you see your company(ies) in the next few years?
The TV screen! That's when I'll really feel accomplished. When I have all kinds of different celebrities and indie artists from all over wanting to sit with me. For right now, every episode is going to be dedicated to showing the world Jersey talent. I plan on working with every big name in NJ.
